Description
Historical cameo brooch based on Bertel Thorvaldsen's relief “The Night”, crafted from 14k yellow gold (tested and guaranteed).
The large oval shell cameo sits in a simple bezel setting made of gold and shows the finely cut, detailed image of Nyx, goddess of the night, in flight with her two sons Hypnos and Thanatos. The boys – personifications of death and sleep – nestle closely to their mother and are safe in her arms. The mother's head, adorned with opium poppy capsules, is slightly bowed and her eyes are closed. Flying towards the observer from the background is an owl, which accompanies the scene as a guardian of the night and an attribute of Nyx.
The subject of this beautiful brooch is modeled on the famous work of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844).
On the back, the piece of jewelry has a simple, functioning pin with a safety catch.
The exquisite brooch was created around 1880 and is a wonderful example of the reception of antiquity during the period of historicism. It is an extraordinary collector's item of outstanding delicacy and quality.
Dimensions of the brooch: 5.0 x 4.0 cm.
