A brief history of traditional costume jewellery

Formerly a form of expression for rural communities and the rural population, the jewellery of various regional traditional costumes impressively illustrates the relationship between clothing, people and society. The focus was on representing regional identity, marital status and one's own (financial) standing. Incidentally, traditional costume was originally understood to mean the clothing worn for festivals and church services. Unlike today, dirndls and lederhosen were considered work clothes. Knowledge of the characteristics of authentic traditional costumes and old costume jewellery is now mainly preserved by traditional costume associations, ensuring that it lives on beyond the Oktoberfest.

Authentic traditional costume jewellery for women

There are many ways for women to accessorise their traditional costumes. On the one hand, you can use clothing accessories such as skirt pins and bodice sashes, or you can adorn yourself with classic body jewellery such as rings, bracelets, necklaces and headdresses.
For a beautiful dirndl neckline, a garland-style traditional necklace made of silver strands is naturally recommended. Alternatively, an opulent choker necklace can be chosen. This sits directly on the neck and usually has to be individually adjusted to fit the wearer. Historically, this piece of jewellery is a good indicator of the former owner's wealth: the more strands it had and the more elaborate the clasp was, the wealthier its wearer was.

Traditional earrings are a good choice for high-necked dirndls. Delicately decorated earrings with turquoise or garnet are particularly effective with feminine up-dos or braided hairstyles.

If you appreciate perfectly coordinated accessories, you should choose a jewellery set for traditional costumes. Earrings, necklace, bracelet and ring are designed and embellished to form a harmonious whole.
Together with a silver bodice brooch or a skirt pin decorated with hunting trophies and coins, the jewellery for the lady's costume is complete!

Men's jewellery for traditional costumes

Traditional jewellery for men consists exclusively of clothing accessories. Particularly noteworthy is the Charivari, which is worn at the front of the fly of leather trousers and has developed from a type of watch chain. This piece of jewellery is not only decorative – its pendants were once considered talismans and souvenirs or proof of a successful hunt. Here, too, the more pendants the charivari has and the more opulent it is, the wealthier its owner is. It was and still is a status symbol.
