Fine micromosaics like this one are artfully composed of numerous, tinyandnbsp;precious stones. During the 19th century, specialized production of these fragile works of art developed in Italy's historic sites, particularly Naples, Rome, and Florence. Tourists flocked to the cultural capitals of Europe on the so-called Grand Tour, considered a must in the education of people of the upper class and nobility, to study the art and culture of these places.
Very popularandnbsp;as souvenir jewelry were these very micromosaics, which presented themes such as birds, animals, ancient Roman ruins, flowersandnbsp;and images of bucolic Italian peasant life.
This present pendant with itsandnbsp;micromosaic of a little bird is also aandnbsp;charming testimonyandnbsp;of that period.
