Description
Beautiful shell brooch with fine and quality cut representation of the goddess Diana. The goddess of hunting carries her attribute, the quiver, and is accompanied by a stag. The stag alludes to the hunter Acteon, who had observed Diana in the bath and was turned into a stag as punishment for his forbidden looks. This representation of Diana is visibly inspired by the Diana of Fontainebleau, a larger-than-life marble sculpture which today stands in the Galerie des Caryatides in the Louvre in Paris. Originally this sculpture was the central object of the Jardin de la Reine in Schloss Fontainebleau and a highly prominent and exemplary masterpiece for the artists since the second half of the 17th century.
The cameo sits in a decorative corded tombak frame. It has a simple but well functioning needling with C-hook and safety chain on the back.
The brooch was created around 1850 in France.
Dimensions of the brooch: 5,6 x 4,9 cm.
Dimensions of the cameo: approx. 4.8 x 3.9 cm.
