Impressive historical dragon brooch from France, crafted from yellow gold 750 / 18 ct (tested and guaranteed, French hallmark struck).
The round brooch features a sculpted dragon with spread wings and open mouth. The body of the mythical creature is extremely detailed, with finely worked scales and feathers. The dragon's eye is formed by a tiny, round faceted emerald. A finely shimmering pearl sits on the animal's wing. The tail of the mythical creature wraps skilfully around the dragon's body, forming the round shape of the brooch.
The back of the piece of jewellery has a simple, well-functioning pin with a C-hook.
This unusual brooch was created in France around 1870 and is typical of the goldsmith's art of the time. The dragon symbolises many different qualities. For example, it embodies vigilance, wisdom and strength, and in Asia it is also seen as a lucky charm.
