Exquisite brooch with antique seashell cameo with the fine and detailed representation of Hercules in profile to the right. The ancient hero is depicted with his characteristic attribute, the fur of the Nemean lion, which lies like a hood over the back of his head. Hercules killed the lion, considered invincible, in battle and furred a cape out of his fur, which also made him almost invulnerable.
The mussel mix is rich in detail and executed in an extremely fine cut. The cameo sits in a simple silver frame and has a simple needle with C-hook on the back as well as a small loop for hanging as a pendant.
The exquisite brooch finished around 1860 in Naples and is a very nice example of the 19th century antique enthusiasm.
