Description
Large ancient shell gems brooch with rare depiction of St George on horseback killing the dragon. The cameo sits in a corduroy framing from Pinchbeck. It has a simple, well-functioning needling with C-hook on the back.
The brooch was created around 1850 in England and is a typical example of the English Victorian art of jewellery. The representation of Saint George has always enjoyed great popularity in England, where Saint George is regarded as a symbol of chivalry. The name day of the saint is a holiday in England and he is the patron saint of the English kingdom as well as many English kings and of course also of the famous and noble order of trouser bands, on whose collane he is depicted among other things.
