This exquisite piece of historical jewelry was created in Italy around 1870. Fine micromosaics, such as this one, are artfully composed of numerous tiny fragments of glass. Especially during the 19th century, specialized production of these fragile works of art developed in Italy's historic sites, particularly Rome and Florence.
Tourists flocked to the cultural capitals of Europe on their Grand Tour, considered a must in the education of people of the upper class and nobility, to study the art and culture of these places. It was en vogue to bring back mementos or souvenirs from these intense trips.
One popular type of souvenir jewelry in particular was micromosaics, which presented subjects such as ancient Roman ruins, flowers, birds, animals, and images of bucolic Italian peasant life.
The present brooch, with its wonderful micromosaic of theandnbsp;Roman Forumandnbsp;also falls into this era of 19th century jewelry art and is an exquisite testament to its time. It can also be wonderfully combined with our earclips with the item number 20219721.
