Description
Extraordinary antique shell gem brooch with finely cut representation of the cross of the Order of Malta under the crown belonging to the coat of arms. The cameo sits in a beautiful frame of sterling silver 925 (stamped and guaranteed) processed in fine filigree technique. She has a well-functioning needling on the back.
The Order of the Knights of Malta was founded in Jerusalem in 1099, and after the relocation of the Order's headquarters to Malta, renamed the Order of Malta in 1530. Since Malta was a British crown colony from 1814 to 1947, the Maltese Order is also closely linked to England and the English royal house, for example the English Queen Elisabeth ii is Sovereign Head and member of the Order.
This cameo was made in England around 1900 and belonged to a member of the Order. It was worn as a sign of belonging at meetings.
