Theandnbsp;exceptionally beautifulandnbsp;well preserved cameo brooch, made of grated lava earth from Vesuvius,andnbsp;is of brown hueandnbsp;and shows the portrait of a Caesar. In the triumphal type of representation, his spellbound gaze is directed slightly sideways over his shoulder. The Roman emperor wears the laurel wreath and his robeandnbsp;is held together at the shoulder in a manner typical of the period.
A noble setting withandnbsp;cord framing and pin back with C-hook claspandnbsp;completes the classic design of the brooch.
This historic piece of jewelry was created around 1830andnbsp;in Naples. Cameos were popular souvenirsundnbsp;of a Grand Tour at the time.andnbsp;educational travelers brought them back from southern Italy as souvenirs to ancient excavation sites.
