The large pendant eyelet, which is also covered with mosaic stones, allows chains of different thicknesses to be attached.
Micromosaic jewellery, also known as "pietra dura" or "Florentine mosaic", was a popular souvenir for the nobility and wealthy upper classes who travelled through the cultural capitals of Europe on their Grand Tour in the 19th century. The mosaics, made in Italy from numerous tiny glass stones, depicted motifs such as animals, flowers, ancient Roman ruins, but also mythological scenes and depictions of simple Italian peasant life.
This particularly rare and charming pendant, which is still preserved in its original box from the jeweller J. H. Werner from Berlin, was created around 1860 and is a particularly decorative and artistic testimony to the period.
